In May 2006 I visited my friend Meg in Grand Junction, Colorado. We hiked up No Thoroughfare Canyon to the first large waterfall. Along the way we crossed the stream where plants whose leaves reminded me of sunflowers were poking just above the surface. It was not clear whether they had just been flooded by recent rains or were true water plants. Returning home across the San Juan Mountains I stopped to photograph fields of dandelions heralding the end of winter.
